10 simple things you can do to change our food system: 10 simple things you can do to make a positive change.
1
Join the Soil Association
Join and you will be supporting one of the most important movements of our time, helping to build a healthier and more sustainable food and farming future.
2
Choose a climate-friendly diet
For a diet that is healthier for you and the environment, ensures a fair price for the farmer and the highest standards of animal welfare, look for food that is seasonal, local and organic, and eat less but better-quality, grass-fed meat.
3
Buy organic
There is no magic bullet to tackle the challenges that face us, but the buying decisions we make every day are a simple but powerful form of direct action.
4
Grow your own food
Growing and eating your own seasonal food can be healthier for you and your family and cuts out food miles. By managing your garden using organic principles you can encourage bio-diversity, meaning you're helping to improve your local environment.
5
Help your local school transform their food culture
The Food for Life Partnership inspires young people and their families to make food a priority and get excited about growing and cooking local, seasonal and organic food, and learning about life on the farm.
6
Tell the government your feelings on GM
Shoppers wanting to avoid GM products may be surprised to know that over a million tonnes of GM crops are imported each year to feed non-organic livestock, which in turn supply our supermarkets with pork, bacon, milk, cheese and other dairy products.
7
Support the case for biodiversity – join the 'save the bees campaign'
Pesticides have a devastating effect on the environment and there are uncertainties about the effectiveness of their official safety regulation, as well as the unknown impact on human health. It is estimated that one third of human food supplies depend on pollination by our threatened bee population.
8
Support our farmers - get on their land
Visit an organic farm and find out first hand about a farming system that works in harmony with nature.
9
Get involved locally
Shop at a farmers' market, join a community-supported agriculture scheme or local group to champion a local food culture.
10
Learn new self-sufficiency skills
From growing your own fruit and veg, to keeping chickens and bees – why not get back to the land with some new self-sufficiency skills.
