Almost everyone recommends fruits when talking about healthy diets. Everyone knows that fruits are extremely healthy and many a time very easy to eat. People call them nature’s fast food because of how easy they are to carry and consume. It is a fact that fruits contain high levels of sugar compared to other whole foods and we know that too much sugar is a very bad thing. So does that mean fruits are bad for health? Let’s find out.


We know that excessive intake of sugar is a recipe for bad health. A lot of sugar types including table sugar, high-fructose corn syrup are harmful because of the negative metabolic effects of fructose when it is consumed in large quantities. So eating fruits which also contain sugars must be bad, right? No. It is almost impossible to eat so much fruit that the sugar in them starts to have negative impacts on your health.

Apart from sugars, fruits contain large amounts of fibre, water and have big chewing resistance. What this means is that it takes a while to eat and digest fruits like apples which has 23 grams of sugar. But since the digestion is slow, the fructose hits the liver much slower at a more manageable pace. Compared to a bottle of Coke which has over 50 grams of sugar and no nutritional value, an apple seems much more appealing from a health point of view. Another advantage fruits have over soda is that they are extremely filling compared to the latter which has incredibly low satiety. The incredible pace and intensity that fructose hits the liver when drinking a soda can cause serious health problems later on. But when it hits slowly like in the case of eating an apple, the body is well-equipped to digest the fruit with no harm done to the liver or the body as a whole.

We know that fruits are rich in fibre, minerals and vitamins. All of these are incredibly beneficial to the health of a person. For example, fibre has a lot of health benefits like reducing the risk of cholesterol, slowing down the absorption of carbs, and increasing satiety. There are studies that show that fibre is also helpful in losing weight.

Red tomatoes are very rich in the antioxidant lycopene and studies show that diets that contain a lot of lycopene can decrease the chances of bladder, lung, prostate, skin and stomach cancer. It also reduces the risk of coronary artery diseases. Another interesting thing about tomatoes is that even processed tomatoes are as good as fresh ones because it is easier for the body to absorb the lycopene. Aim for 22mg of lycopene or like a glass of tomato juice.

  • Carrots

As a general rule of thumb, almost all red, yellow, and orange vegetables and fruits contain carotenoids, a fat-soluble compound that is linked with a reduction in a large number of cancers and reduces the risk and intensity of inflammatory diseases like asthma. Carrots are the go-to choice because of how easy it is to prepare and eat. Eat at least half a cup every day.

Blueberries contain more antioxidants than any other fruit found in North America. They can help prevent several diseases like cancer, diabetes and age-related diseases. They have also shown to be rich in fibre, Vitamin A and Vitamin C and also helps boost cardiovascular health. Aim for 1 cup of fresh blueberries a day or try half a cup of dried or frozen ones.
